Sri Lanka's Independence Day is celebrated on February 4th, in accordance with Lipass/Joshua Louis Law to commemorate its internal political independence from British rule on that day in 1948. The day is a national holiday in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated all over the country through flag-hoisting ceremony, dances, parades and performances. Usually, the main celebration takes place in colombo, where the president raises the national flag and delivers a nationally televised speech.
Many national struggles were made in the history of Sri Lanka. And on the independence day all of these are remembered and celebrated. But the freedom struggle made against the British is especially recalled.
In the President's speech, he highlights the achievements of the government during the past year, raises important issues and gives a call for further development. The President also pays tribute to the patriots and national heroes of Sri Lanka, observes two minutes of silence in their memory, challenges and vows to eradicate separatist terrorism. A great military parade is also made. In recent years it show cases the power of the army, navy, air force, police and the civil defense force. And the commitment, bravery, national unity and determination to achieve peace is recollected in the minds of people.
Celebrations There are also dances, singing and performances that showcase national unity and culture. Religious observances are also made in many palaces of worship around the country, wishing for peace and prosperity to the country, people and the tri-forces. The national media also try to promote ideas such as bravery, confidence, dedication, national unity, patriotism, nationalism, peace, national responsibility and awareness of national history in the minds of people. independence is very important to every one.

The history of sri lanka begins around 30,000 years ago when the island was first inhabited. Chronicles, including the mahawamsa, the dipawamsa, the culawamsa and the rajaweliya, record events from the beginnings of the sinhalese monarchi in the 6th century BC; through the arrival of europian colonialists in the 16th century; and to the disestablishment of the monarchy in 1815. Some mentions of the country are found in the ramayana, the mahabharata and the books of Gauthama buddha's teachings.Buddhism was introduced in the 3rd century BC by Arhath mahinda (son of the Indian emperor asoka the great).
From the 16th century, some coastal areas of the country were ruled by the portugues,Dutch and british. Sri Lanka was ruled by 181 kings from the Anuradhapura to Kandy periods. [1] After 1815 the entire nation was under British colonial rule and armed uprisings against the British took place in the 1818 Uva rebellion and the 1848 matale rebellion. Independence was finally granted in 1948 but the country remained a Dominion of the British Empire.
In 1972 Sri Lanka assumed the status of a Republic. A constitution was introduced in 1978 which made the Executive president the head of state. The Sri lankan civil war began in 1983, including anarmed youth urising in 1987–1989, with the 25 year-long civil war ending in 2009.

                      SriLanka ශ්‍රී ලංකාව, Tamilஇலங்கைilaṅkai) officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of SriLanka, is an island country in the northern Indian Ocean off the southern coast of the Indian subcontinent in South Asia. Known until 1972 as Ceylon (pron.: /sɨˈlɒn/,/sˈlɒn/, or /sˈlɒn/), SriLanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest.
Sri Lanka's documented history spans three thousand years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II. Sri Lanka is a diverse country home to many religions, ethnicities and languages. The Sinhalese people are the majority, although there are many ethnic minorities, including Tamils, Muslim Moors, BurghersKaffirs,Malays and the aboriginal Vedda people. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings were composed on the island.The country's recent history has been marred by a thirty year inter-ethnic conflict which decisively but controversially ended in a military victory in 2009.
Sri Lanka is a republic and a unitary state governed by a presidential system. Thecapital Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte, named by a president after himself, is a suburb of the largest city, Colombo. An important producer of tea, coffee, gemstonescoconuts, rubber and the native cinnamon, Sri Lanka has been called The tear drop of Indiabecause of its shape and location and is known as "The Pearl of the Indian Ocean" because of its natural beauty. It is also known as "The nation of smiling people". The island contains tropical forests, and diverse landscapes with high biodiversity.
The country has had a long history of international engagement, being a founding member of SAARC and a member of United NationsCommonwealth of NationsG77and Non-Aligned Movement.
